Initially called ‘ Homage to Monet’ it was changed to Nymphéas for the artistic reason that the French name of the inspiration for this colourway ( Monet’s ‘Water Lillies’ series) encapsulated the essence of it as both natural and ethereal much more succinctly. Also for the somewhat more pragmatic reason that it was easier to fit on my labels.

It’s difficult to know what to say about this as there is so much I could talk about that you’re very probably not interested in so in an effort to narrow it down I think the things I’d most like you to know about this are: It is the pure joy of colour made flesh (well not flesh…fluff), I love this so much I vacillated wildly between being desperate for everyone to be able to share it and not wanting to share it at all because I am a little wool Gollum and the white is intentional; considering how much effort I put in daily to make sure there is no white where white shouldn’t be it was difficult to step out of that mindset to use white on wool in the same way we use it on canvas but it was absolutely worth it. Usually we want the even depth of colour in semi-solids or the lightening effect of white in a tonal but pure white among rich colour is a mistake, it distracts from the colour and interupts the flow in a finished fabric but here it’s like paint, it draws the eye as a highlight, it enhances the colour transitions and it’s due to the white that you get the watercolour wash effect. It knits up with a base petrol blue and regular lines of rainbow colours. Beautiful.

This pure worsted 100% BFL is an absolute dream to dye, to use and to wear, it’s smooth, lustrous, strong and takes colour beautifully. With subtle lustre and little pilling it is ideal for garments and projects that require good stitch definition.

Recommended care: Can be machine washed cool on a wool/handwash cycle. We recommend hand washing to preserve the best of the yarn and colour. Do not bleach. Do not wring out. Do not tumble dry.

While we do our best to keep our colours consistent each hand dyed yarn is one of a kind so we advise alternating skeins in a multi-skein project. See FAQs for more information.
